Can extended fasting cause permanent hair damage?

If someone went on a water fast for a few weeks (not for weight-loss), would this cause permanent damage to the hair as far as losing hair and hair-thinning?

Can extended fasting cause permanent hair damage?

Yes, because the lack of nutrients and vitamins protein....your body will would be in danger and it would show signs.....you wouldn't even believe how much damage you can actually do to yourself with poor nutrition..i think the fact that i starved myself and was anorexic for years...it played a role in my health today for a fact...so i really don't suggest going on your fast

Usually it will not cause permanent damage. After you start eating well again the hair will start to grow out healthier. It will not do anything for the damaged ends of the hair, but the roots that grow out will be stronger and less prone to damage. My suggestion is to always take a good multi-vitamin or prenatal vitamin, especially if you are fasting. This will help to keep the hair healthy even if you aren't eating good. Also, you could try taking Omega-3. You can get Omega-3 naturally by eating fish. This is good for your hair too and helps it to stay moisturized. Hope this helps.
