I have two love birds and lately they both been losing alot of hair and i wanna know why?

Why do they have hair? They're probably just molting. Or in your case, shedding.

They're probably moulting. Birds replace their feathers every year or so as the old ones become tattered. The feather loss should be fairly uniform and evenly distributed over the body; if they're missing feathers in just one area they may be pulling their feathers out for some reason. In this case you should take them to your avian vet to see why and how to help stop it.

Moulting is perfectly normal and natural. And messy. Feathers end up everywhere!

birds don't have hair.they have feathers. it isn't rocket science.

If your bird has 'hair' it should be thoroughly studied in a laboratory. :)

1. If they are losing feathers but growing in new ones at about the same rate, then it's likely a regular molt, though it can be caused by dry skin, in which case, give them a daily shower with a water bottle. Some even like to take a luke-warm shower as long as you're careful

2. If they are losing a LOT of feathers and developing bald patches, it can be one of two things. Sometimes parasites on the skin will cause irritation and feather loss. Look the birds over for ticks or other external parasites. It can also be caused by a nervous behavior known as feather plucking. Watch them closely, are they pulling out their own feathers? If so, they would need to be temporarily separated and given cone collars in order to break the habit, then observed carefully.

If it isn't feather plucking or a disease like the others have mentioned, your lovebirds must be moulting.

Birds go through a period of moulting (shedding alot of feathers) once in its first year and about once in two years afterwards. Moulting takes about 2 to 6 weeks, and you must take a little extra care for them, as they will be slightly less immune to illnesses.

I think a good example in understanding what moulting is to birds is when us women have our periods. We tend to feel awfully tired and have additional burdens like headaches and problems with our digestive system, right? It is very much like that for the birds.

Keep them warm, let them have alot of rest, let them listen to relaxing music, talk to them and make sure the food and water are always fresh and clean.
