Why is my cat losing her fur?

I have 2 cats, both are female and will be a year old in june. One of my cats (Jynx) is a black siamese tabby cat, the other (Kika) is a grey and white tabby cat and both have recently gotten over a big flea problem once winter hit near November. About 3 weeks ago i noticed Jynx started losing hair on her hind legs (at this time they have no fleas) I just thought it could be stress from my other cat (Kika). Over the past few weeks it has moved from just her hind legs to her tail and lower back and even her belly. On her hind legs there are also scabs that are healing.I dont understand why this is happening to just Jynx and not Kika. Maybe she's Jynxed, haha. But im really worried about her and do not have the money to take her to the vet. What can i do to help my baby. i care about her very much and dont want her to eventually become bald.(being a siamese tabby, she has a very unique look that i love) Please help.

P.S.She doesn't seem to be in pain. And she doesnt scratch that area.

Usually a checkup from the vet isn't expensive. But the hair loss is probably the damage the fleas did and Jynx probably had more fleas than Kika. It didn't happen to Kika for this reason. Bathe Jynx every four days with flea shampoo. Brush her fur (or the rest of it) every day and search for anything wrong with her. As for the scabs, put triple antibiotic on them every day and they should heal quickly. My friend's dog is bald for some odd reason but he had almost no fleas. Also if all fails take her for a checkup at the vet. Give both Jynx and Kika equal attention and bathe them both about once a week and brush them every day or two days after Jynx is back to normal. Hope this helps!

i think that taking her to the vet is the best thing...sometimes hair loss is a symptom of another type of problem--like diabetes. you say that you don't have money for a vet...you may want to call around and see if a vet can answer your question via phone without you having to come in. some vets will work with you on payment plans, if you ask around...

Seperate your cats because it may be stress from your other cats! Good Luck

Well, I think you have to bring her out into the sun and fresh air some time and let her run around a small area that she has never been in before. So you have to let her exercise and get fresh air.

Then maybe massage that area, to ensure blood flow goes to that place. Groom her fur lightly and wash that area with only water, without any shampoo.

If its fleas then you can buy some flea powder and have a try, you don't really have to go to a checkup for that.

You definitely want to go to the vet for an exam. There are many skin problems that look similar but have very different treatments. If the vet cannot identify the problem by sight, they may do a skin scrape to check for mites, look under a Wood's Lamp (like a black light) to look for fungal infections, or even do a DTM culture to find out what is causing the hair loss.

Since you mentioned that you had a flea problem, and there is hair loss and scabbing, it sounds like Flea Allergy Dermatitis. Some cats are more affected by fleas than others, and can get allergic reactions when fleas bite them. It is easy to treat with flea control meds and possibly a cortisone injection.

HOWEVER... there are a few other things that could be going on. The areas of the body that you mention the hair loss on are often sites where cats lose hair due to stress.

Your cat could also have mites or mange, (easy to treat with medication or a special medicated bath.) She could also have ringworm, which is transmissable to humans.

It could also be an allergic reaction. Many cats have hair loss due to allergies to food or something in their environment, (carpet shampoo, laundry detergent, etc...)

Most of these problems are easy to treat once the vet diagnoses it. But it is very hard to self-diagnose and self treat. Get your cat to the vet ASAP.

My sisters cat had the same thing. We thought she was just recovery from a wound from a fight. We took her to the vet for another reason and the vet said that she was losing fur in that place due to tapeworms. He gave her a cream and she has been fine ever since which was about 4 years ago.
