What can cause a kitten to lose hair?

i've never seen this before on any of my other cats this kitten is about 5 months old and he is losing hair in patches starts on his head, behide his ears one leg.... and it leaves white almost like dead skin in its place.he's not sick he runs around with the other cats and acts just fine.i tried flea and tick shampoo but that made it worse?i made a vet ap. but its not for 2 weeks?does anyone have any idea on what it could be or how to help him or had this before?

I'm going to go with fungal infection or demodectic mange. Those and flea allergy are the most common reasons cats lose fur. Don't use the flea and tick shampoo you bought. It's way too harsh for kittens and won't help the skin. My best advice is to hang on until the vet appointment. The vet may want to do a skin scraping on your kitten. He will take a dulled scalpel and scrape gently along the bald patches just until the skin bleeds a little. Next, he will put the scrapings on a glass slide and take a peek under the microscope and see if there are any critters. Depending on what he finds, your kitten will probably need a series of medicated baths (about 4, once every 2 weeks) and/or some topical treatments. And of course, if they find fleas, a good prescription flea treatment will fix that. :)

Ringworm comes to mind. If you have lots of contact with the cat, do you have any leisons? Small raised itchy areas???? Might want to have this checked out sooner rather than later.
